Cocaine mess update: Redeemers' Univeristy re-admits students

In February 2013, 28 students of Redeemers University were expelled by the university for allegedly failing drug tests. The tests were conducted last November for 42 students during their exam. The expulsion generated a lot of criticisms causing the school to rescind its decision in April. The school wrote letters to the affected students asking them to face a panel to explain why they failed the test, after which the panel would make a new judgement.

Well, the school has reviewed the case and has decided to re-admit all 28 students on the condition that the students will miss a whole semester and go for five month rehabilitation at a rehab centre. A decision that didn't go down well with the affected students and their parents.

Governor Kwankwaso Rejects Jonathan's Request To Stand beside Him

There was a mild political drama at Nigeria’s Presidential Villa on Sunday night when Governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso of Kano State rejected the request of President Goodluck Jonathan to stand beside him as Tony Anenih, the chairman of the Board of Trustees of the People’s Democratic Party, read a communiqué at the end of their “peace” meeting.
Mr. Kwankwaso was the spokesman of a group of PDP governors who last Saturday walked out of the venue of the party’s mini-convention.
He was at Aso Rock Villa to participate in a meeting called by Mr. Jonathan to iron out differences between the president’s faction of the party and a splinter group of governors and other party members who staged the dramatic walkout.

At the end of the peace meeting, which was attended by 16 governors, Mr. Anenih was mandated to speak with reporters as Mr. Jonathan and his deputy, Namadi Sambo, were reduced to spectators. A presidential source told SaharaReporters that President Jonathan had beckoned on Kwankwaso to stand beside him, but the Kano State governor refused. “When Mr. President beckoned to Alhaji Kwankwaso to stand by his side as Chief Anenih read out the communiqué, the governor raised his finger and shook it several times. He then headed to the side of Chief Anenih,” said the source. He added that Mr. Jonathan, though clearly miffed, flashed a pained smile.

SaharaReporters learnt that Mr. Jonathan first met behind closed doors with former President Olusegun Obasanjo for close to two hours in the private residence of the president, and then met with 16 PDP governors, including four of the group that walked away from the mini-convention. The splinter group, led by former Vice President Abubakar Atiku, subsequently met at the Musa Yar’Adua Convention Center in Abuja and announced the formation of the “New PDP.” The rebellious governors include Babangida Aliyu of Niger State, Rabiu Kwankwaso of Kano State, Murtala Nyako of Adamawa, and Abdulfatai Ahmed of Kwara State.

Mr. Anenih read the communiqué flanked by President Jonathan on the right and Governor Kwankwaso on the left, with other governors behind them. The chairman of the fractious party’s board of trustees stated that “the leadership of the party and the PDP governors met today to discuss the incident that occurred during the PDP special convention on the 31st of August 2013, whereby some state delegations walked out of the convention ground to announce a faction of the party.” He added: “The meeting was smooth and encouraging and the discussions will continue on Tuesday with all the aggrieved governors in attendance.”

No Nigerian airport was listed among the best in Africa in the 2013 Skytrax World Best Airport Awards held at Passenger Terminal EXPO, Geneva, Switzerland.

South African airports dominated the top 10 ranking in Africa, with Cape Town International Airport emerging the Best Airport in Africa, followed by Durban King Shaka International Airport and Johannesburg (Tambo) International Airport in 2nd and 3rd places respectively.

This year’s awards, voted by airport customers from around the world, garnered 12.1 million responses.

Egypt’s Cairo International Airport was ranked 4th while the 5th position went to Mauritius International Airport.

East London Airport, South Africa, was placed in the 6th position; Addis Ababa Bole International Airport in Ethiopia, 7th; and Port Elizabeth Airport, South Africa in 8th position.

Morocco’s Marrakech Menara International Airport and Seychelles International Airport ranked 9th and 10th respectively.

South Africa also made a clean sweep of the Best Airport Staff category with Cape Town International Airport, Durban King Shaka International Airport, Johannesburg International Airport, East London Airport, and Port Elizabeth Airport occupying all the five positions.

World’s best airport

Singapore Changi Airport was voted the 2013 world’s best airport, the 4th time it had claimed the top prize.

The Singaporean airport toppled Incheon International Airport, South Korea, which moved to second place, to clinch the position.

Amsterdam’s Schipol Airport, Hong Kong International Airport, and Beijing Capital International Airport were ranked 3rd, 4th, and 5th best in the world.

“In winning this prestigious accolade, Singapore Changi cements its place as one of the world’s favourite airports and Skytrax offer their sincere congratulations on what has been a fantastic year of achievement” said Edward Plaisted, Chairman of Skytrax.

“The vast array of leisure and entertainment facilities really standout at Changi and serve to highlight the extent to which the management has gone to ensure maximum levels of passenger satisfaction.

“We only have to look at the fact that Changi served more than 50 million passengers for the first time during 2012, to see that it continues to attract customers and maintain its place as one of the world’s leading hub airports,” Mr. Plaisted added.

Lee Seow Hiang, Chief Executive Officer, Changi Airport Group said that winning the Skytrax World’s Best Airport award again is an immense honour for Changi Airport.

Friends of late Nike Ewar Ogungbe send an open letter to her in-laws

Adenike Ogungbe was a renowned make-up artist and founder and CEO of Ewar Makeovers based in Lagos. She died of complications following childbirth on the 3rd of July, in Sagamu, Ogun State and was laid to rest in her husband's family church burial ground in Ago-Iwoye, Ogun State on Saturday, 6th of July, 2013.

Exactly two months after her death, her friends, who have been investing her death, have written an open letter to her in laws, accusing them of negligence that led to Nike's death. The letter below...

FG Declares NSCDC Sole Protector Of Critical Infrastructures...

Federal Government has moved put to rest the rivalry between the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) and the Nigeria Police over control of the nation's critical infrastructures by declaring that the role is constitutionally designated to the Corps.

President Goodluck Jonathan, worried by the spate of vandalism of all the critical infrastructure and national assets in the country,has therefore called on the warring security agencies to bury their differences so as to put an end to what he described a ‘threat’ to the nation development.

Amaechi's ADC Declared As Deserter By Police ...

Rivers State Police Command, has declared the ADC to the state governor, Mr. Chibuike Amaechi, ASP Seimeikumo Debewari as a deserter.

The police also removed Debewari as the ADC to Governor Amaechi.

The state Police Commissioner, Mr. Joseph Mbu, in a statement, said that Debewari had refused to honour an invitation extended to him by the state Police Commissioner and the Inspector General of Police.

It will be recalled that Debewari was invited by the Police over issues relating to the recent fracas on the floor of the state House of Assembly.

The statement by the Assistant Commissioner of Police Admin, Mr. Austine Sanomi, said that the whereabouts of Debewari had remained unknown to the Police after the incident on the floor of the House of Assembly on July 10 this year.

“Rivers State Police Command wishes to inform the general public that acting ASP Debewari, who had ignored all lawful directives to see the Commissioner of Police and the Inspector General has not been neither seen in Rivers State Command nor at the Police Force headquarters, Abuja since July 10, 2013.

“His whereabouts is currently unknown to the Nigerian Police Force, consequently he ceases to be the ADC to the Rivers State governor.

“As the CP Rivers State Command and by the powers conferred on me by section 398(1) of the Police Act and regulation cap 359 laws of the Federation of Nigeria 1990, the officer is hereby, declared a deserter from the Nigeria Police Force subject to the approval of the IG,” he said.

Father Docked For Allegedly Killing Sick 9-Month Old Son...

An Ilorin Magistrates’ Court on Monday remanded a 25-year-old father, Muritala Elemosho, for allegedly killing his nine-month old son, Qudus Elemosho.

The accused was alleged to have murdered and buried the child, who was on admission at the Children Specialist Hospital Centre, Igboro, Ilorin, on Aug. 12.
The Prosecuting Police Officer, Mr Elijah Abegunde, told the court that the accused was requested to take the child for a PVC test at the hospital’s laboratory when he sneaked out of the hospital with him.
He said that the father later killed and buried the child without the knowledge of the hospital management.
“The accused callously killed his son for no just cause and hurriedly buried him,” he said, adding that investigation into the issue was ongoing.

He urged the court to remand the accused in prison pending the completion of investigation.
He said the accused was arraigned on a one-count charge of culpable homicide contrary to Section 221 of the Penal Code.
The Magistrate, Mr. Ibrahim Dasuki, in his ruling, ordered the remand of the accused in Mondala Prison Yard, Ilorin and adjourned the case to Sept. 20 for mention.(NAN)
