Victor Valdes put up two superb saves last night to disallow Diego Simeone’s team scoring opportunities, foiling an Arda Turan and David Villa’s shot.
Filipe Luis saw red later on in the encounter before Pedro was tripped by Miranda for Messi’s penalty in the 89th minute.
The Argentina international blasted his effort six yards from goal against the cross bar.
The victory was coach Gerardo ‘tata’ Martino’s first trophy in charge of the Catalans and Barca’s 16th in almost four years.
“This triumph came about because of what happened last year,” Argentinean, Martino, said.
“I ended up winning it because of an unfortunate turn of events. The trophy belongs to the players, to Tito Vilanova and the rest of the coaching staff,”
Turan was also sent off in injury-time for protesting against the referee’s decision, despite already having been substituted.
